For most people, young or old, male or female, a natural tan is a beautiful thing. We look fitter, healthier, and perhaps even thinner. It represents a successful happy lifestyle, suggests wealth and can be linked to a greater sense of self-esteem.
Much as we all love to tan, over the past decade we have been convinced by dermatologists and sunscreen manufacturers that the sun is evil and a suntan is an almost certain re-curser to dangerous skin cancers. Thankfully sensibility in the medical profession is beginning to prevail and the truth about Ultra-Violet, the benefits and real dangers are becoming understood.
It has been known for generations that sunlight exposure is the body’s natural way of producing Vitamin D. But only recently has it become apparent that Vitamin D is a key element in preventing the most dangerous forms of cancer. Breast, ovarian and colon cancers, along with prostate, bladder, stomach and uterus cancers are all now thought to be linked with a Vitamin D deficiency. In other words we need sunlight to live.
Also known to the medical community is that moderate sun tanning can also prevent sunburn as it increases the amount of melanin in the skin, which is the skin's natural defense against skin damage.
Therefore sun exposure has many benefits but that good news doesn't mean we can just run out and become a sun worshipper. The sun still has a bad side if we over expose or burn our skin.
The sun emits 3 types of Ultra Violet rays. UVA, UVB & UVC, differentiated by their wavelength. Thankfully for mankind, the most dangerous UVC rays are filtered out by the earth’s Ozone Layer. Although the percentage of UVA to UVB varies, it’s the more energetic UVB which cause the major problem. In other words too much UVB leads to sunburn. Sunburn can be very painful, it can ruin a vacation, but worst of all it can ruin our skin. Sunburn causes irreparable damage, damage that in later life can lead to premature aging, wrinkles, brown spots or worst of all those skin cancers.
So we have a dilemma. We want the health benefits of sunlight, the feel good factor of a suntan but balance these with the long term risk of skin damage.
At O'Sole Mio we believe the answer is "High Pressure Tanning".
Established in 1994 O'Sole Mio is the only tanning salon on the Treasure Coast that offers High-Pressure tanning. Please don’t be fooled by other salons that “pretend” they offer UVA only tanning – it’s simply not true. Any salon that offers $3 tans or unlimited tanning packages are not offering High-Pressure tanning.
We offer our clients the choice between a 12 minute Stand-up booth and an 18 minute Lay-down bed. Both our bed & booth are booked up quickly so we always recommend you call ahead for an appointment.
